St. Valentine's Day (1).

 St. Valentine's Day (1).

St. Valentine's Day has roots in several different legends. One of the earliest popular symbols of the day is Cupid, the Roman god of Love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with a bow and arrow. Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On February 14,Valentin8 was beheaded. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter signing it, "From Your Valentine".

Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, wenloved by all, wrote notes from his jail cell to children and friends who missed him.

February 14 was also a Roman holiday, held in honour of a goddess. Young men randomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities.

St. Valentine's Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send 'Valentines", a greeting card named after the notes that St. Valentine wrote from jail. Valentines can be sentimental, romantic and heartfelt. They can be funny and friendly. If the sender is shy, valentines can be anonymous.

Americans of all ages love to send and receive valentines. Handmade valentines are created by cutting hearts out of coloured paper. Valentines can be heait-shaped, or have hearts, the symbol of love, on them. In elementary schools, children make valentines for their classmates and put them in a large decorated box, similar to a mailbox. On February 14, the teachers open the box and distribute the valentines to each student. After the students read their valentines, they have a small party with refreshments.

You can write a short rhyme inside the heart:

Roses are red. Violets are blue, Sugar is sweet, And so are you!

Or you can buy valentines with messages in them. If you are shy, you can sign it, "Your Secret Admirer".

Table Manners.

 Table Manners.

Good table manners avoid ugliness. All rules of table manners are made to avoid it. To let anyone see what you have in your mouth is offensive. So is to make a noise. To make a mess in the plate is disgusting. So there are some rules how to behave yourself at the table:

Do not attract undue attention to yourself in public.

When eating take as much as you want, but eat as much as you take.

Never stretch over the table for something you want, ask your neighbour to pass it.

Take a slice of bread from the bread-plate by hand, don't harpoon your bread with a fork.

Never read while eating (at least in company).

When a dish is placed before you do not eye it suspiciously as though it were the first time you had seen it, and do not give the impression that you are about to sniff it.

Chicken requires special handling. First cut as much as you can, and when you can't use knife or fork any longer, use your fingers.

The customary way to refuse a dish is by saying, "No, thank you" (or to accept, "Yes, please"). Don't say "I don't eat that stuff", don't make faces or noises to show that you don't like it.

In between courses don't make bread-balls to while the time away and do not play with the silver.

Do not leave spoon in your cup when drinking tea or coffee.

Do not empty your glass too quickly — it will be promptly refilled.

Don't put liquid into your mouth if it is already full.

Don't eat off the knife.

Vegetables, potatoes, macaroni are placed on your fork with the help of your knife.

If your food is too hot don't blow on it as though you were trying to start a campfire on a damp night.

Try to make as little noise as possible when eating.

And, finally, don't forget to say "thank you" for every favour or kindness.

Questions:

1. All rules of table manners are made to avoid ugliness, aren't they?

2. What is "good table manners"?

3. Why do our people need them?

4. What other table manners do you know?

5. Do you follow them?

Vocabulary:

ugliness — вульгарность

undue — чрезмерный

to avoid — избегать

to empty — опустошать

promptly — быстро, незамедлительно

----------

My Family's Meals.

 My Family's Meals.

My family isn't large. It consists of four members. But each member of owe family has his own tastes and interests. For example, my brother is fond of sports. So early in the morning he goes jogging. That's why he has nothing to eat before it, because it would be bad for him to eat before exercises. But when he comes back, he has a shower and is more than ready for breakfast. He always needs a cup of coffee to really wake him up. His breakfast usually consists of a bowl of cereal with milk and sugar. This he follows by toasts and juice. My father eats the same as my brother.

My mother has a lighter breakfast of just youghurt and a grapefruit. As for me, a cup of tea is enough for breakfast. And my mother sometimes scolds me for it, because it's important to have a really goods breakfast.

We don't have our main meal at lunch time. My father takes sandwiches with him to work. To be healthy, he also eats fruit. My mother is able to be more varied in her lunches, because she is a housewife. It means that she can prepare what she likes. Her favourite dish is roast meat. As she likes to bake, there is always something tasty at home.

Our evening meal is usually eaten at 7 o'clock. The main course is often meat with vegetables. Sometimes we eat pizza or pasta with delicious sauce. We try to eat our main meal together. In our busy lives it is the one time of day when we sit down and have a good talk.

Questions:

1. Is your family large?

2. What do your family have for breakfast?

3. Do you have your main meal together?

4. When do you have your main meal?

5. What do you have for supper?

My Usual Shopping Round.

 My Usual Shopping Round.

We go shopping every day. The other day my mother took me on a usual shopping round. We went to the grocer's and greengrocer's as we had run out of sugar and onions.

At the greengrocer's there was a long queue. But we had nothing to do but stand in the queue if we wanted to get to the counter and have some onions. The shop-girl weighed us half a kilo of onions, we thanked her and went out. Then we made our way to the grocer's where we bought a kilo of sugar and some sausage. We were about to go home as my mother suddenly remembered we had hardly any bread in the house. We dropped in at the baker's and bought a loaf of brown bread, some rolls and buns. On our way home the mother decided to call at a commercial shop. She was looking for a present to my father — as it was his birthday soon.

As soon as we entered the shop, we found ourselves in a fantastic motley city of silk skirts and shirts, woolen pullovers, frocks and leather boots and shoes. The smiling girl met us at the counter. My mother said she wanted to buy a size 50 shirt of a dark-blue colour. The girl suggested looking at a dark-blue cotton shirt with short sleeves. The shirt was the latest fashion and we were sure the father would like it. We paid the money at the cash-desk. The cashier gave us a receipt and with it we came up to the shop-assistant. She passed us a wrapped parcel with the shirt, thanked us and added they were always glad to see us at their shop and we happy and a bit excited went out of the shop.

Shopping (2).

Shopping (2).

Shopping has common elements wherever it takes place. A buyer looks for a seller who is offering something the buyer wants or needs at a price the buyer can afford to pay. Sellers often advertise their wares in newspapers, on the radio or TV, on posters etc. Sellers use a variety of tactics to induce buyers to purchase from them at a price which leaves some profit.

Shopping is a part of our daily life. And we have to deal with it whether we like it or not. There are people who hate going shopping. So they make a list of what they need and run through stores buying the needed things. Sometimes they even don't care about the price. And there are people who go f rorn store to store looking for goods of better quality and lower price. Those don't worry about the time they spend shopping.

But there is a very good service called Postal Market. It really helps you to save your time and get goods of high quality. You just have to look through a catalogue, choose the things you like, order them and wait a little to get them.

 Questions:

 1. What is shopping?

2. How do sellers advertise their wares?

3. What do the sellers do to increase their profit?

4. Is there any service which helps to save time during shopping?

5. What kind of a service is it?

 Vocabulary:

 common — общий

buyer — покупатель

seller — продавец

price — цена

purchase — покупка

Postal Market —

Shopping (1).

 Shopping (1).

When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men's and women's clothing stores, grocery, a bakery and a butchery.

I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient. A department store, for example, true to its name, is composed of many departments: readymade clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, linen, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there.

There are also escalators in big stores which take customers to different floors. The things for sale are on the counters so that they can be easily seen. In the women's clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, coats, beautiful underwear and many other things. In the men's clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties, etc. In the knitwear department one can buy sweaters, cardigans, short-sleeved and long-sleeved pullovers, woolen jackets. In the perfumery they sell face cream and powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos.

In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, macaroni, flour, cereals, tea. At the butcher's there is a wide choice of meat and poultry. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, biscuits. Another shop we frequently go to is the greengrocery which is stocked by cabbage, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, beetroots, green peas and what not. Everything is sold here ready-weighed and packed. If you call round at a dairy you can buy milk, cream, cheese, butter and many other products.

The methods of shopping may vary. It may be a self-service shop where the customer goes from counter to counter selecting and putting into a basket what he wishes to buy. Then he takes the basket to the check-out counter, where the prices of the purchases are added up. If it is not a self-service shop, and most small shops are not, the shop-assistant helps the customer in finding what he wants. You pay money to the cashier and he gives you back the change.

 Questions:

 1. What do we do when we want to buy something?

2. What kinds of shops are there in every town?

3. Where do you like to do your shopping?

4. What departments is a department store composed of?

5. Where are the things for sale?

6. What can we buy in the knitwear department?

7. What can we buy in a food supermarket?

8. What methods of shopping are there?

 Vocabulary:

to be composed of...

At the Post-Office (2).

 At the Post-Office (2).

I like to go to the post-office because post is one of the things that link people living in different cities and countries.

There are some counters at the post-office. At one of them you can buy envelopes, stamps, post cards. You can write a letter right there and post it or you can write it at home and then throw it into one of postboxes throughout the city. It is very convenient because you don't have to go to the post office again.

At another counter you can send a telegram. To do this, you need to fill in the form, give it to the clerk and pay the sum according to the number of words in your telegram.

At another counter you can send or get parcels. To send a parcel you have to bring it to the post-office, the clerk will weight it and tell you how much money you have to pay. To get a parcel, you need to show your passport, so that the post-office clerk were sure that it is really you who is to receive the parcel.

At the next counter you can make a subscription to newspapers and magazines. You need to pay certain amount of money, which is stated in the catalog, and your favourite newspapers and magazines will be delivered directly to your home.

At the post-office, there are also P.O. boxes. P.O. box means post office box, it is a numbered box to which someone's mail can be sent and from which they can collect it.

 Questions:

 1. Where can envelopes and stamps be bought?

2. Do you need to go to the post-office again if you want to send a letter which you wrote at home?

3. What do you need to do to send a telegram?

4. How can you send a parcel?

5. Is it possible that your favourite newspapers and magazines were delivered directly to your home?

6. What is a P.O. box?

 Vocabulary:

 counter — стойка

envelope — конверт

stamp — марка

post card — открытка

to post — отправлять

parcel — посылка

clerk — служащий

subscription — подписка

to deliver — доставать

P.O. box —

to collect — собирать

-----

At the Post-Office (1).

If you want to buy stamps, postcards, envelopes, to send a telegram or money order, to subscribe to newspapers or magazines, you have to go to the post-office. At some post-offices there is a special window where you may pay your rent, telephone, gas and electricity bills. Yesterday, I had to send a parcel to my friend in another city. So I went to the nearest post-office. I handed the package to the clerk at the window marked "Parcel Post". She weighed it and I paid for the stamps which she stuck on the package. Then I went to the next window marked "Stamps". I had to queue up there. When my turn came, I bought writing paper, envelopes and a few stamps. I sat down at a desk and wrote a letter. When the letter was ready, I wrote the address on the envelope, stuck a stamp on it and dropped it into the nearest letter-box.

 Questions:

 1. Where do you have to go if you want to buy stamps, postcards, envelopes, to send a telegram or money order?

2. Where may you pay your rent, telephone, gas and electricity bills?

3. Where can you buy stamps and envelopes?

My Favourite English Painter.

 My Favourite English Painter.

From early times Englishmen have been great collectors and travellers. The general level of art in Great Britain has always been high. But it has never reached that of France and Italy. Many greatest foreign masters were attracted to Britain by lavish rewards and honours. Among them were the Flemish Anthony Van Dyck, Harts Holbein of German extraction. They were the originators of the brilliant school of English painting.

As for me, William Hogarth is the most colourful figure, whose paintings attract by their singular originality. Hogarth wrote series of paintings which, like acts of a drama, were bound together by a plot. His famous series are "A Harlot's Progress", "A Rake's Progress" and "Marriage a la Mande". In a few years came another series "Elections". In them Hogarth displays the English state system, her statesmen and the evil practices going on during election campaigns.

Hogarth didn't want to follow the vogue and copy the old masters: the truth of life, the every day reality seemed to be of greater importance. He breaks off with the old style. Hogarth is the creator of his own method. His contemporaries called Hogarth's style the "modern moral subject". Hogarth's realism paved new ways for English art.

William Thackeray in his book "The English Humourists of the 18th century" describes William Hogarth in the following way: "...he's a jovial honest London citizen, stout and sturdy man, who has a proper bourgeas scorn for everything pretentious and false.

 Questions:

 1. Is the level of art in Great Britain high?

2. William Hogarth is the most colourful artist of 18th century, doesn't he?

3. What Hogarth's series of paintings do you know?

4. Did Hogarth create his own method?

5. How does William Thackeray describe Hogarth in his book?

 Vocabulary:

The Hermitage.

 The Hermitage.

One of the world-wide known museums is the Hermitage. The word "Hermitage" means "a place of solitude". This name was given in the XVIII century by Catherine П to her private museum housed in a small building adjacent to the Winter Palace and accessible only to the chosen few.

In the course of time, the Hermitage grew into one of the greatest museums of the world. At the present, the collections take up five interconnected buildings. The museum retains its old name.

The accumulation of artifacts let to the formation of new departments devoted to the culture and art of the Peoples of the East, of the Prehistoric culture, and of the Russian culture. Three other departments are those of Western European art, classical antiquities and numismatics.

One of the rooms that impressed visitor the most is St. George Hall. The interior of the room is considered by experts to be a perfect example of the Classical Style. The room covers about 800 square metres, but does not seem enormous due to perfect proportions. It is decorated in the whitest marble and gilded bronze.

The Throne Hall was used for column assemblies. Members of the Tzar's family, when coming of age, took their oaths here.

The Leonardo da Vinci Hall is one of the most gorgeous interiors. The hall is decorated in the style of 17 century French Baroque. The Hermitage possesses two, out of 12 or 14 works surviving from Leonardo.

The Rembrandt collection is one of the most treasured possessions of the museum. It members 24 canvases.

The Malachite Room reflects the style of 1889. The columns, pilasters, and floorlamps are veneered with thin plaques of rich green malachite. About two tons of malachite were used in decoration of the room.

The Tretyakov Gallery.

 The Tretyakov Gallery.

Moscow is replete with art galleries and museums. Yet there is one gallery that remains a symbol of Russian art. It is the world-famous Tretyakov Gallery.

The founder of the gallery was the entrepreneur Pavel Tretyakov (1832—1898), who was from the merchant class. Beginning in 1856, Tretyakov had a hobby of collecting works by the Russian artists of his time. He was a famous patron of the arts who helped to support the "peredvizhniki" (a movement consisting of realistic painters in the second half of the 19th century). Toward this goal, he intended to purchase a collection from a St. Petersburg collector, Fyodor Pryanishnikov, and, having added his own collection, created a museum. The government bought Pryanishnikov's gallery in 1867, but Tretyakov gradually acquired an excellent collection, exceeding all other collections in Russia in its volume and quality.

In 1892, Pavel Tretyakov donated his entire collection to Moscow. His brother Sergey Tretyakov (1834—1892) was also a collector, but only of Western European paintings.

The brothers' collections were at ,the core of the Moscow Municipal Art Gallery, which opened on August 15,1893. At first, it contained 1,287 paintings and 518 pieces of graphic art by Russian artists, as well as 75 paintings by Western European artists.

Later, the Western European paintings in the Tretyakov Gallery were transferred to the Hermitage and the A. S. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, and the Tretyakov Gallery began to specialize exclusively in Russian art.

After 1918, the Tretyakov collection grew many times with the inclusion of the collection of Ilya Ostroukhov (1858— 1929), an artist, paintings of the Russian school from the Moscow Rumyantsev Museum, and many private collections.

Presently, the gallery is being improved by carefully planned purchases. Already more than 55 thousand works are kept there. There is the rich collection of ancient Russian icon painting of the 12th—17th centuries including Andrei Rublyov's famous "Trinity", as well as significant works of painting and sculpture of the 18th — 19th centuries — paintings by Dmitriy Levitskiy, Fyodor Rokotov, Karl Bryullov, Orest Kiprenskiy, Alexander Ivanov (including his wellknown canvas "The Appearance of Christ Before the People"), Ivan Kramskoy, and sculptures by Fedot Shubin.

The gallery has an excellent selection of the best works by the "peredvizhniki": Ilya Repin (including "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan"), Victor Vasnetsov, Ivan Shishkin, Vasiliy Surikov ("The Morning of the Strelets Execution"), Vasiliy Vereshchagin and others.

The blossoming of many areas of Russian art at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries is also well represented.

Suffice it to name such artists of the period as Mikhail Vrubel, Isaak Levitan, Nicholas Rerikh, Alexander Benua, Mikhail Nesterov, Konstantin Korovin, Mstislav Dobuzhinskiy, Konstantin Somov, Valentin Serov, Boris Kustodiev and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. After the relatively short period of the 1910's— 1920's, new movements in art — futurism, cubism, etc. — were quickly developed.

Such an artistic movement as socialist realism also produced a number of talented and original artists. This trend is represented by works of Alexander Deineka, Arkadiy Plastov, Yuri Pimenov, Dmitriy Nalbandyan, and others.

The main building of the gallery includes the renovated Tretyakov home and several buildings that were attached to it at various times. The main facade of the building was erected in 1902 according to plans by the artist Victor Vasnetsov.

In 1994, the Tretyakov Gallery opened after 10 years of restoration. This was not just a facelift to the building; the interior and technical equipment were brought up to the highest standards of quality, which is as it should be, since it contains so many treasures of Russian art.

Music in Our Life.

 Music in Our Life.

I love music, I think people can not live without it. The first thing I do in the morning I switch on my tape — recorder. We can hear music everywhere: in the streets, in the shops, on TV, over the radio, in the cars, in the parks, everywhere. I think it's really doesn't matter what kind of music you prefer: rock, pop, classical, jazz. A lot of people are fond of music. They buy tapes, go to the concerts, visit Concert Halls and Opera Theatres.

I enjoy listening music because it reflects my moods and emotions. Very often when I'm blue, I play my favourite merry songs and feel much better.

Sometimes I attend music halls and the concerts, when popular groups and singers are there. I like watching music programs on TV. I like to know more and more about popular talented groups and singers I like. One wall of my room is covered with posters of "Bon Jovi", "Scorpions", "Roxette", Russian singers Agutin, Sjutkin, Linda and others.

Some people go to musics schools, they play different musical instruments, sing in the chorus, try to compose music.

Unfortunally there are so many ungifted singers on the stages, that it makes me sad. To have a good producer doesn't mean to have good ears and voice. I think that only talented people can claim to be singers.

 Questions:

 1. Do you like music?

2. What kind of music do you like?

3. Are there many people fond of music?

4. Does music help you?

5. What are your favourite singers?

6. Did you go to the musical school?

 Vocabulary:

 to switch on — включать

tape-recorder — магнитофон

to reflect — отражать

mood — настроение

to attend — посещать

to cover — покрывать

poster — плакат

to compose — сочинять

Theatre.

Theatre.

Theatre is a place where you can see a play staged. It is also one of entertainments.

A theatre consists of two parts: the stage and the hall. They are separated by a curtain and the orchestra. Actors and actresses perform on the stage and public occupies the hall, the pit, the dress-circles, the boxes and the gallery.

If we made up our mind to go to the theatre we should go to the box-office to buy tickets. Seats can be reserved beforehand.

The last performance I saw was the "Nut Cracker" by Tchaikovsky. How great it was! The main parts were performed by Vadim Pisarev and Inna Dorofeeva. Everyone knows that they are very talented dancers. But I also was impressed by a very young ballet-dancer who was performing the part of Masha girl. I think she deserves respect of the audience because she did her best and looked great for her young age. I had a great time that night.

But we are to admit that theatre is not popular now as it used to be. There are many people who prefer to seat comfortably before the TV and enjoy themselves without leaving their homes.

 Questions:

 1. What are the parts a theatre consists of?

2. Where can people buy their tickets?

3. Where was the "Nut Cracker" performed?

4. Are theatres as popular now as they used to be?

5. Why don't people go to the theatre as often?

 Vocabulary:

 play — пьеса

entertainment — развлечение

pit — партер

dress-circle — бельэтаж

performance — спектакль, представление

to admit — признавать

At the Theatre.

 At the Theatre.

The 20th century brought great changes into the theatre. Cinema, radio, television, video altered the course of the major performing arts and created the new ones. But still there are hundreds of puppet theatres, conservatoires and philharmonics, musical comedy theatres, drama theatres and opera houses where the audiences are excited at the prospect of seeing a play and the actors are most encouraged by the warm reception. But before going to a theatre you should book a ticket at a box-office. The most expensive seats are in the stalls, boxes and dress-circle. The seats in the balcony, pit and the upper circle are less expensive, they are cheap. Then at the entrance to the theatre the attendant tears your theatre ticket in half. He gives you your half back so that you can find your seat by its number. Another attendant shows you to your seat and sells a programme that will tell you which parts the actors are playing and how many acts there are in the play. Then you take your seat and may enjoy the play.

I have always envied the dwellers of large cities. They have so many opportunities to enjoy themselves. Theatres, cinemas, variety shows, circus, conservatoire, concert halls, etc. are at their desposal. In provincial towns like mine is we have only amateur dramatics. That's why I always take the smallest chance to go to a theatre when in a city.

 Questions:

 1. Why have you always envied the dwellers of large cities?

2. Have you only amateur dramatics in your town?

3. Which seats are the most expensive, less expensive, cheap?

 Vocabulary:

to bring (brought, brought) — приносить

to alter — менять

to encourage — воодушевлять

box-office — театральная касса

pit — амфитеатр

entrance — вход

attendant — служащий

to tear (tore, torn) — рвать

to envy — завидовать

variety show — эстрадный концерт

coservatoire — консерватория

a mateur dramatics — театральная самодеятельность

My Favourite TV Programme.

My Favourite TV Programme.

Many people watch TV at leisure. One can choose the programme one likes best. Those who like music can listen to various concerts. Sport fans can watch football or hockey matches. Television extends our knowledge about the world in which we live. Millions of people can see different lands, new plants, unusual animals and birds, mountains and valleys.

My favourite TV programme is one made by Dmitriy Krylov. It is a weekly programme. It is broadcast on Sunday. This programme is very popular in our country. They show many historical places, tell interesting facts about different countries and cities, broadcast interviews with famous people. I like this programme and try not to miss it.

I prefer to watch youth programmes such as "While Everybody's at Home" on Sunday and "The Morning Star". In addition I like to see interesting films. They might be feature, adventure, scientific, horror, cartoon and other films. I enjoy seeing Walt Disney's cartoons.

Now and then I like to see cognitive programmes: "What? Where? When?", "Brain-ring" They are enjoyable and entertaining programmes.

Vocabulary:

to extend — расширять

to enjoy — получать удовольствие

My Favourite Actor. Kevin Costner.

My Favourite Actor. Kevin Costner.

Kevin Costner — Actor Come Producer Kevin Costner, a famous american actor, was born in Los Angeles. He spent his childhood often on the move, changing schools frequently, owing to his father's job at the regional electricity company. As a teenager, he developed a keen liking for football, baseball and basket-ball and was also interested in singing and writing poetry.

He married his college sweetheart Cindy whilst still at California State University and came out with a business degree in marketing. In his spare time he appeared in local theatre productions. Theatre became increasingly important to him and after having worked six weeks in a marketing company, he gave the job up to become an actor.

He played in many small part roles before his principle role which was not a success. However Costner himself was given good reviews. In 1987 his starring role in "The Untouchables" and "No Way Out" really introduced him to international fame. Indeed, he won the Star of Tomorrow prize from the U. S. National Association of Theatre Owners. Then in 1988 came "Bull Durham" which was a huge hit movie in the States about baseball. His subsequent film "Field of Dreams" was also a success and touched baseball again. Then came the violent drama movie "Revenge" followed by his first directorial debut film "Dances With Wolves" in which he also starred and which won 7 Oscars. His movie "Robin Hood, Prince of the Thieves" was also a great success.

I like this actor because the characters he plays are strong personalities, wise people who are worthy of my admiration. In my opinion, this is the reason of his growing popularity in many, countries. He is not only a talented actor, who's acting draws your attention from the very moment you see his face on the screen. But he is also a successful producer and continues working at his new films which are certain to amuse the people.

My Favourite Actors.

My Favourite Actors.

My favourite actors are Mel Gibson and Whoopi Goldberg. Whoopi Goldberg came a long way to her present international success. Her mother was divorced and poor. Whoopi chose a very difficult career for a black woman. She started as a theatre actress and did very well. In the end she had a show on Broadway. Film producers saw her show and a new career in cinema began. She almost got an "Oskar" in Steven Spielberg's film. Whoopi can be a very serious actress. But she can be very funny too.

Mel Gibson, one of eleven children, was born in New York. But his family moved to Australia when he was twelve. He is a traditional Hollywood man of action in some ways; he is strong and handsome with bright blue eyes. But in his films he can be funny and shy like a little boy. Gibson became famous in the "Mad Max" film, made by the Australian director George Miller. Max lives in a desert after a nuclear war. People drive incrediable cars and lorries and wear strange clothes. It is a fantastic mix of past and future. Mel Gibson is now also a film director. His first film as director was "The Man without a Face".

Questions:

1. What are your favourite actors?

2. Was it easy for Whoopi Goldberg to become a star?

My Favourite Film (3).

My Favourite Film (3).

Among different types of films (that is comedy, romantic drama, western, adventure film, police drama or detective film, psychological thriller, horror film, historical film) best of all I like comedy and romantic drama, because such films are very cheerful and full of life. I don't like horror films and I find them quite disgusting. Sometimes I may watch a police drama or a historical film, but I'm not very keen on these types of films. Now let me tell you about one of my favourite films "Gone with the wind" by the novel by Margaret Mitchell. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of its producer, but I like the acting.

Scarlett O'Hara — there is no more lively character, which makes the reader and the spectator palpitate (in the film this role was played by Vivian Lee). Maybe the words from the Irish song are about Scarlett: "if the Irish eyes are laughing, oh, they' re stealing your heart".

Scarlett goes through many trials and troubles, but her sharp and strong mind, her strong will help her to survive. And not only to survive, but to render and to develop moral values in this cruel world.

Ratt was telling her in vain that they were both scoundrels. He is cynical by conviction, she is under the pressure of circumstances. Scarlett is a symbol of wonderful America, the child, who was crippled with greed, but didn't lose inner beauty.

Even her name, which was found at the last moment in the publishing house contained the ideal and vice, innocence and regeneration. In English it sounds like Scarlett flower and illness (scarlet fever). Much in common, though their characters and fates are different, has Scarlett with the character of another film Jane Eyre. They are too different, but at the same time too similar. Scarlett is very beautiful, flighty and noisy. Jane isn't beautiful. She is modest and peaceful. But they are both strong in the difficult minutes of the life. Skarlett and Jane for the sake of love can pass through all the difficulties. They are faithful to their men. And I like it, that they, thank to their mind and abilities reached a lot in life. And eventually people get to appreciate both of them.

Questions: 1.

What is your favourite film?

2. What types of films do you know?

3. Who is the author and producer of your favourite film?

4. What other books, written by this author, are known to you?

5. For what features of character do you like or dislike the main hero?

Vocabulary:

to palpitate — трепетать

spectator — зритель

scoundrel — подлец

conviction — убеждение

pressure — давление

circumstance — обстоятельство

greed — жадность

scarlet fever — скарлатина

for the sake of love — ради любви

faithful — преданный

to appreciate - ценить

Last Tuesday I saw the film "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare. The starring was perfect. Romeo was played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

And I'll try to tell you about this film. In the town of Verona there were two rich families, the Capulets and the Montagues. There was an old quarrel between those two families. One day Capulet made a great supper. At that supper Romeo saw Juliet and fell in love with her at ones. Juliet had the same feelings. Romeo asked Juliet to marry him. She agreed, but nobody knew about their plan. The next day Romeo and Juliet came to friar and he married them.

Some days passed and Juliet's father told her that she was to marry a young man whose name was Paris. Juliet didn't know what to do. But the friar helped her. He gave her medicine and told her to go home and be ready to marry Paris. But when she drinks that medicine she will sleep for forty — two hours.

Juliet did as the friar told her. Juliet's parents thought that she was dead and put her into the family tomb. When Romeo heard that Juliet was dead he bought some poison and went to the tomb of the Capulets. Paris was there and Romeo killed him.

Then Romeo kissed Juliet on the lips and drank his poison. At this moment Juliet woke up and saw that the young man was dead. Juliet took a dagger that was on the floor and killed herself.

My Favourite Film (1).

Usually we see films either in the cinema or on the TV. But from time to time I go to the cinema. My favourite film is "War and Peace". The script of the film was written by Sergey Bondar-chuk and W. Solowjew. The Leningrad (now Sankt Petersburg) ballet-dancer Ludmila Saweljiewa played the main part. She played this role wonderfully. The other parts were played by A. Ktorov (old Bolkonsky), 0. Tabakov (Nikolai), I. Skobzeva (Helena).

Borodino struggle, hunting, the first ball of Natasha made a great impression on me.

My favourite film is "The Fate of a Man". This film is excellent. It is difficult to find other words to describe it. It has enormous vigour and delicacy, it is full of purity and hope.

...A man is caught in the storm of war and loses everything. Black clouds surround him, and -yet he finds strength to bear up with it all; he finds strength to adopt a child, a destitute, helpless creature..." All the great events and the feelings aroused are depicted with taste, tact and restraint. Тo wish to draw attention particularly to the extraordinary performance of the boy. Even if the film has no other merits, the child scenes, so subtle, profound and lifelike, so full of tragic vigour — these scenes alone would win Bondarchuk the reputation of a great director.

Vocabulary:

enormous — огромный, ужасный

vigour — сила, энергия

delicacy — деликатность, щепетильность

purity — чистота, непорочность

to bear up — держаться стойко

to arouse — возникать, появляться

 to depict — изображать, описывать

"Titanic".

 "Titanic".

As you know, the 3-hour-14-minute film "Titanic" is no mere disaster movie. It's an epic love story about a 17-yearold American aristocrat who is betrothed to a rich and hateful suitor but falls in love with a free-spirited artist, who won his third-class passage in a card game. It's "Romeo and Juliet" on a sinking ship and has become an international sensation.

"Titanic" is also a movie about money and its evils. With fine irony, Cameron has spent more dollars than any other filmmaker to make a film that denounces the rich.

The $8,4 million costume budget alone would finance several independent movies. Production designer Peter Lamont copied the real Titanic down to the exact shade of green on the chairs in the smoking lounge. The sumptuous sets have made-to-order replicas of the china, the stained-glass windows — and since all of it was going to be destroyed, nothing could be rented. "To the best of our knowledge, there was no violation of historical truth", says Cameron. "We have a great responsibility. Whatever we make, will become the truth, the visual reality that a generation will accept", says Cameron.

The special effects are in the service of the story. In the 80-minute sinking of the ship, you don't wonder what's real and what's computer-generated. What you feel is the horror of the experience, the depths of the folly that left this "unsinkable" ship so vulnerable to disaster. While the women and children are loaded into lifeboats (there were only enough for half the 2,200 passengers), the third-class passengers are locked.

Cameron makes terrifying poetry out of chaos with images of the ship breaking in half, the deck rising perpendicular to the water as passengers bounce off the ships's giant propellers into the freezing ocean.

But it is the love between the unhappy Rose and the sanguine, openhearted Jack that occupies stage center. Is it the great love story Cameron so desperately wanted to make? Not quite. Visually, his lovers are an odd match: next to DiCaprio's boyish beauty, Kate Winslet looks womanly. And once the disaster strikes, their individual fates become overwhelmed by the communal horror. Our hearts, at least, couldn't but break once these lovestruck kids were surrounded by floating frozen corpses. Cameron's strength is in painting canvases with broad strokes, and for 194 minutes beholds you in his grip. This is one grand entertainment — old-fashioned filmmaking brought up to date with the most spectacular technology available.

Cameron says today that if he had known what it would take to bring his vision to the screen, he would have stopped before he started. But "regret" is not in the guy's vocabulary.

Questions:

1. What is "Titanic" about?

2. Did Peter Lamount copy the real Titanic?

3. What do you feel when you watch the film?

4. What does J. Cameron make of chaos?

5. What occupies stage center of the film?

6. What does Cameron say today?

Vocabulary:

to generate — порождать

folly — глупость, безрассудство

vulnerable — уязвимый

to bounce — соскакивать

sanguine — жизнерадостный

desperately — отчаянно

odd — необычный

to overwhelm — подавлять

The Best Film I Have Ever Seen.

The Best Film I Have Ever Seen.

Lots of people find watching films one of the best ways of spending their leisure time.

Due to numerous video facilities, which have emerged in this country over the past years, we have a chance to watch the most popular and new films. Sitting in a comfortable armchair one can enjoy watching detective stories and westerns, horror films or screen versions of books.

As for me, I am like all my friends always impressed by films screened after a book. Moreover, I find it enjoyable to reread the book which I don't remember very well to be able to compare it with the screen version.

The film "Emma" with Gwyneth Paltrow as a leading actress is the screen version of the book written by the popular English woman-writer Jane Austen in 1816.

Although many books of Jane Austen are about finding the perfect husband, she never married. She lived most of her life with her mother and sister.

The plot of this film tells us about a very attractive and clever woman. Emma decides that she wants to help people to have a life that is as perfect as hers. When she meets Harriet who is not as bright as she is and not as cultured as she is, Emma decides to try to improve her and help her find love. Harriet is admired by Robert Martin, a local farmer.

Harriet likes him too but Emma does not think he is good enough for her and tells her to reject him.

Emma tries to match Harriet with someone else called Mr. Elton who is the local vicar. Unfortunately, the vicar does not fall in love with Harriet. He falls in love with Emma instead. Emma angrily rejects him. Emma is not always perfect. She often makes mistakes. One of the most memorable scenes in the film occurs at a picnic. Emma is irritated by a woman who is very boring so she tells her how boring she is.

During the film, Emma argues a lot with Mr. Knightley but then she discovers that she is in love with him. Unfortunately, she is not the only one. Harriet is in love with him too.

Luckily, the story ends happily for everyone. The film is very amusing. My dream now is to read this book in the original, that is, in English.

Questions:

1. What is one of the best way of spending our leisure time?

2. What are many books of Jane Austene about?

3. What does the plot of the film "Emma" tell us about?

4. Why is the film "Emma" amusing?

Vocabulary:

to be screened — быть экранизированным

to compare — сравнивать

screen version — экранная версия

vicar — приходский священник

to reject smb.

Television in Our Life.

 Television in Our Life.

Television now plays an important role in our life. It is difficult to say if it is good or bad for us. It is clear, that television has advantages and disadvantages. But are there more advantages than disadvantages? In the first place, television is an entertainment.

But it is not only a convenient entertainment. For a family of three, four or five, for example, it is more convenient and less expensive to sit comfortably at home than to go out to find entertainment in other places. They don't have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre or cinema. They turn on the TV-set and can see interesting films, concerts, football matches.

But some people think that it's bad to watch TV. Those who watch TV need do nothing. We are passive when we watch TV. Television shows us many interesting programmes. But again there is a disadvantage here: we watch TV every evening, and it begins to dominate our lives.

My friend told me that when his TV-set broke down, he and his family found that they had more time to do things and to talk to each other. There are other arguments for and against television.

Very often the programmes are bad. Sometimes they show too much violence in films and news programmes. There is also too much pop music and ads. Ads on the whole are convenient for grown-ups. But is it good for children to watch all those ads where they show all kinds of underwear and what not?

Questions:

1. What advantages does television have?

2. What disadvantages does television have?

3. What did my friend find when his TV-set broke down?

4. What do they sometimes show?

Vocabulary:

entertainment — развлечение

to turn on — включать

passive — пассивный

to dominate — доминировать

to break down — ломаться

A Visit to the Cinema.

 A Visit to the Cinema.

Once I read an article about various kinds of entertainment. According to it TV, radio and cinema have made great changes in the entertainments with which people fill their free time.

There was a time when people knew what to do to enjoy themselves: they played games, sang, played musical instruments, went out shooting.

Nowadays we can get entertained by the TV, the radio, the theatre or the cinema. Cinema is available no matter where you live. You can always find the film you like among horror films, thrillers, westerns, detective, love, musical films or comedies.

Not so long ago most people used to visit cinema every week. Often cinema houses were overcrowded. But at present video production has flooded the market and cinema became less popular.

I don't go often to the cinema and my friends are not regular cinema-goers either. But if there is a film, which is a hit with the public, I do my best to watch it. The last film I saw was Hollywood remake of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". The action takes place in the modern world but all the rest is just like great Shakespeare had described: people, action, feelings. The original text was used in the film. And I have to mention that the music was great. I think the actors and the actresses did their best and looked great. I'll remember the film for a long time.

Questions:

1. What are some kinds of entertainment?

2. How did people entertain themselves when there was no TV, radio or cinema?

3. What are some kinds of films?

4. Did people use to go to the cinema often?

5. Why are there less cinema-goers now?

Vocabulary:

to enjoy — наслаждаться

horror — ужас

thriller — триллер

overcrowded — переполненный

to flood — наводнять

to mention — упоминать
