Schools Abroad.

 Schools Abroad.

In Britain all children from five to sixteen go to school. They spend six years in "primary" school and then go on to "secondary" school. In Britain there are "state" schools, which are free and private schools for which parents pay. Many British private schools are "boarding" schools. The children there usually wear uniforms. They stay at school all the time and only come home in the holidays.

In America all children from six to sixteen go to school. They spend six years in "elementary" school and four or six years in "secondary" or "high" school. At the end of every school year the child takes a test. If he doesn't do well, he has to repeat the material once more. If he does well he goes into the next class. School education is free. Some schools have modern teaching equipment like computers. But there are also small country schools with just one classroom.

At the end of their time at school, most students get a high school diploma. If they want to go on to college, they take college admission tests. Teaching in both countries is usually quite informal. Students often work together in groups and go to the teacher only when they do need help.

Questions:

1. When do British children go to school?

2. Are there any free schools in Britain?

3. At what schools do British children wear uniforms?

4. What can you tell about education in America?

5. Teaching in both countries is very informal, isn't it?

Vocabulary:

Sport in My School.

 Sport in My School.

If you want to keep fit you must go in for one kind of sport or another.

Sport is an essential part of my daily life. Every morning all the year round I do my morning exercises. Almost every day I do some training. In summer I go swimming or rowing. During my summer holidays I go on hikes. I usually spend my winter holidays in the country where I ski, skate or toboggan. I also go in for track-and-field (athletics) events.

Different sports and games are popular with my classmates. All my friends go in for different kinds of sport, such as water polo, gymnastics, horse-racing, wrestling, fencing, weightlifting, boxing, ice-hockey, speed-skating, figure-skating, football, basket-ball, volley-ball, etc. We have fine teams at our school and different kinds of competitions take place there. The boys of my school are crazy about football, they play football and the girls are football fans. The girls never miss a single match played by school teams.

And now a few words about our physical training lessons. In winter our physical training lessons are held out-of-doors. We go skiing or skating. When it is cold outside P.T. lessons are held indoors, in our school gymnasium. We play different team-games such as basket-ball or volley-ball. Besides we have some training in gymnastics.

In autumn and in spring, when the weather is warm we have P.T. lessons at our school stadium.

My school has a sports day once a year in late spring. On this day we have no lessons. All the competitors change into their sports clothes, the spectators find their seats round the track ready to cheer. All the events take place at the same time. This day is a great success every year. Even if the weather is not warm, we enjoy ourselves just the same.

Questions:

1. What do you do every morning all the year round?

2. Where do you usually spend your winter holidays?

3. What sports and games are popular with my classmates?

4. Where are our P. T. lessons held in winter?

5. On what day don't we have lessons?

Vocabulary:

championship — чемпионат

tournament — турнир

to cheer — поддерживать

At Library. My School Library (2).

At Library. My School Library (2).

Libraries make an important part of the world culture. There are infinite number of books in the world. We can not buy all the books we like and would like to read. When we have to write a report on some subject or to learn in details about some phenomenon there is no other way out for us but to use a library.

There are a lot of reading-halls: special halls for scientific reference work, for current periodicals, for music and art, for foreign languages, and others I visited it several times but most often I take books from there.

To enter the library one should have a reading card.

A lot of people go to libraries on weekends.

I like reading. What books do I like'?

I can not read one and the same sort of literature for a long time. I prefer to alternate short stories with the novels, love stories with books on history, poems with plays.

There is a not big library in my school. I must admit it is not bad at all. It is a big light room, very clean and cosy, on the first floor. There are a lot of bookcases and bookshelves there. You can find there books of adventure stories, historical novels, collection of short stories. Two very nice librarians can help you to find the book you need.

Pupils go to the library to read and take books, to look through some new magazines and newspapers. Many teachers go to the school library too.

Questions:

1. Is there a library in your school?

2. Do you like to read books?

3. How often do you go to the library?

4. What kind of books do you like to read?

5. Why do a lot of people visit library on weekends?

Vocabulary:

infinite — бесчисленный

huge — огромный

vast — обширный

enter — зайти

to alternate — чередовать

novel — роман

to admit — признать

At Library. My School Library (1).

At Library. My School Library (1).

Libraries are very important in the life of all people. We can't buy all the books we want to read. That's why we take out books from libraries.

A lot of people go to libraries on Saturdays. They have some time to spare, because Saturday is a day off. They bring their books to the library and go home taking new books.

The librarians take books from the people who come in and give them some new books to choose for reading at home.

In a book there is a little pocket and in this pocket there is a piece of paper. The librarian takes this piece of paper out of the pocket in the book. She fills it in, that is, puts the date on the piece of paper and on the right page of the book. Then she puts the piece of paper in the person's reading card.

Speaking about libraries it is necessary to admit that Moscow holds the first place among all the other cities of the world for the number of its libraries. The largest library in the world is the State Lenin Library with an overall fund of 21 million various titles in 166 languages.

It has 22 reading-rooms, special halls for scientific reference work, for children and youth, for current periodicals, reference books, manuscripts and for other purposes.

The library has a book exchange service with 60 countries of the world.

I enjoy reading books. And it doesn't matter what kind of book it is. It can be a collection of short stories, a book of poems or adventures. I equally enjoy them all. But there's one thing that matters. When I choose a book for reading, it shouldn't be dull but interesting.

I used to get some of my books from my school library. I must admit our school library had a good stock of books and the librarian was always ready to help in one's choice of books. A great number of volumes filled the shelves. One could find there books of adventure stories, historical novels and tales that opened up panoramas of life and history of other countries, psychological novels, collections of short stories, the immortal classics.

Our school library subscribed to several newspapers and magazines. They kept us well informed about the latest developments in this country and abroad, news in the spheres of science, art and literature.

Though I attend libraries on a regular basis, I buy quite a lot of books too, particularly those that I read before and enjoyed reading. I like to have them in my room so that I can turn to them not only once but time and again. I derive an utmost pleasure from sitting in the room where my books are and even if I am not reading them, I like to look at the books on the shelves and to feel that I have my friends around me, friends that will never let you down, that will never betray you.

The School I would Like.

 The School I would Like.

The school I would like would have a swimming pool. I'd have one for the first and second years and also for the third and fourth years. The playgrounds would be separate, one for the young children and the other for the senior forms. A wall would be separating them and there would be a door from one playground to the other. The classrooms would have carpets instead of lino. The desks would be painted and the chairs would have cushions. The chairs would also be painted. There would be a computer for every table in the classroom. There would be at least 12 videos for each classroom. The hall would be very big, about 40 metres long and 30 metres wide. The lessons would be interesting. There would be lots of French and German and English. There would be four floors at the school. There would be a lift to take us up.

The staffroom would be much bigger than the one we have now. It would be light and cosy. There would also be a big library. There would be a lot of instruments: flutes, guitars, drums, etc. The school meals would have different food every day. There would be lots of visits to concerts and parks.

The Subjects We Studied at School. My Favourite Subject (2).

The Subjects We Studied at School. My Favourite Subject (2)

We did quite a lot of subjects at school. They were: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Russian, English, Literature and others.

Every teacher asked for equal and adequate attention to his subject and it was not an easy work to do. I knew that all the subjects were important, but still I was always indifferent to exact sciences.

Since my childhood I have been fond of reading. My favourite subjects were Literature and languages. When I started studying English, the first thing I got interested in, was the different way to express one and the same idea in English and Russian. I wondered why if an Englishman is upset or gloomy he does not say: "I have a bad mood" like Russians do but says: "I feel blue".

There is an infinite number of such things in any language.

I read English books, tried to translate some articles from "Moscow News". Very often I borrowed English books from our school library. I spend a lot of time studding Grammar and doing exercises.

At our English lessons we read quite a lot, but didn't talk much. So me and my friends decided to speak English among us. Very often I spoke English with my friends on the way home after classes.

 Questions:

1. What subjects did you do?

2. Did you like them all?

3. What was your favourite subject?

4. Have you read any English books?

5. Was studing Grammar difficult for you?

Vocabulary:

adequate — достаточный

attention — внимание

indifferent — равнодушный

exact sciences — точные науки

express — выражать

to upset — огорчать

to translate — переводить

to borrow — брать, занимать

among — среди, между

The Subjects We Do at School. My Favourite Subject (1) .

The Subjects We Do at School. My Favourite Subject (1)

We did quite a lot of subjects at school. They were: Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Russian Literature, Chemistry, English, History of this country and many other subjects. It was rather difficult to go to school when a school-leaver, we had so much to do. I know that all the subjects are important and they all must be payed much attention to, but still I didn't like exact sciences. I spent much time on doing them at home. However hard I tried, all those formulas and definitions were mixed up in my head and I couldn't make it out after all. So I had nothing to do but sit for two or three hours swotting Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

My favourite subjects were Literature, History, English. Most of all I liked English. I read English books, tried to translate some stories from newspapers from English into Russian and vice versa. I had some English handbooks and they were of great help to me when I studied English Grammar and did some exercises. At our English lessons we read quite a lot of dull texts from our textbooks. But in my view, written texts and textbooks are not important. The best way to improve your language skills and habits is to work at a language laboratory. But there was no good language laboratory at our school. And I spent plenty of time at home listening to the tapes, imitating the sounds and intonations of the native speakers of English. I was working hard at my pronunciation because my teacher said that it was my weak point. Sometimes I spoke English with my friends after classes and they said I was making good progress in the language.

I decided to take my entrance exams to the Institute because I want to know English. Nowadays, it's impossible to do without foreign languages because of expanding economic, cultural ties of this country with other countries of the world. Besides, one can't be a learned and well-educated person if he doesn't know at least one foreign language. As for me, I'd like to read English and American Literature, to understand it without resorting to anybody's help.

Questions:

1. What subjects did you do at school?

2. Why was it difficult to go to school when a schoolleaver?

3. What subjects didn't you like? Why?

4. What was your favourite subject?

5. What is the best way to improve your language skills?

6. Why did you decide to take your entrance exams to the Institute?

Vocabulary:

to do subjects — изучать школьные предметы

to go to school — учиться в школе

School Life.

 School Life.

I am a pupil of the 11-th form, I study at school number 9. I would like to tell your about our school life.

I go to school five days a week. Our classes start at 8 o'clock a. m. and last till 3 o'clock p.m. So we have 6 or 7 lessons a day. We study many different subjects: Russian, English, French, literatures, history, geography, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, programming and computer sciences. Languages, literature and history are my favourite subjects. I make good marks in these subjects.

The school year is divided into four terms, called quarters. It begins on the 1st of September known as a Day of  knowledge and finishes in May. Each quarter is followed by holidays.

Every pupil has a day-book where the teachers put down the marks, that pupil has earned at the class.  During the classes pupils are to answer the teacher's questions, do some exercises, write sentences, count, read. The pupils are often called to the blackboard. After every lesson the teachers give us home assignment. At the next lesson the teachers check them up. To do good at school one should make home assignments regularly, be active at the lessons and spend at least two-three hours every day studying.

My School (2).

My school is a three-storeyed building. It is quite big with sport ground behind it, inside swimming pool.

On the groundfloor there are the classrooms for the primary-school pupils, workshops, library. There are all kinds of tools and machines in the workshops. The boys of our school have a woodwork room too. There is a room for manual works for girls. Teachers teach them how to cook, sew and design clothes. Our school library is nice and clean. Two librarians help pupils to find books they need. There are many bookcases and bookshelves with a lot of books there.

If you enter the school and turn right you see a big light dining-room.

It is always busy and noisy, but it is clean. Here pupils and their teachers have their lunch. There are blue curtains on the windows and beautiful pictures on the walls.

There is a gymnasium on the ground floor as well. Our physical training lessons are held there. Pupils like to go there even after the lessons, because it has a lot of sport equipment.

Our school has many classrooms. The classrooms are light and spacious. There are three large windows in each classroom with flower pots on the window sills. Each room has teacher's table, pupils desks, blackboard, tablesand charts on the wall, maps and portraits.

There are special classrooms for Chemistry, Physics, Biology, History, Geography, English, and Russian.

On the third floor there is a big nice assemble hall. A lot of meetings, concerts, festivals are held there.

Our classroom is on the second floor. Its windows face theschool-yard.

Our form-mistress is a teacher of Russian language and literature. We respect her very much, she is a kind and knowledgeable teacher. She teaches us Russian and is so fond of her subject, that each of us can not help liking too.

When I think about my school I don't remember its walls and desks; it is my teachers and school-mates who will be always with me. I am so thankful to our teachers for what they have done for us.

 My School (1)

As you become older you realize that there are several essential things and places you always long to come back to. They are your birthplace, your home and the school you went to.

My school was a three-storeyed building situated in one of the residential districts of our city (town, settlement).  All the children from the neighbourhood went there because it was a walking distance from their homes.  There was a sports ground behind the school-building and a green lawn with flower-beds in front of it.

The school was built a few years ago. That's why its classrooms were light and spacious. There were three large windows in each classroom with flower pots on the windowsills.  It was pupils' (especially girls') responsibility to water the flowers. And they did it with utmost care. There were maps and portraits, tables and charts on the walls of the classrooms.

Our classroom was on the second floor. Its windows faced the school-yard.

Our form was the only one at school who had a form-master, but not a form-mistress. He appeared to be a very kind and knowledgeable teacher who spared no time to take us to different places of interest and exhibitions. He taught us Russian and Russian literature. We respected him very much.

Our lessons began at eight o'clock in the morning and lasted till one thirty in the afternoon.  We had six lessons a day.

Every pupil had a day-book where the teachers wrote down the mark each pupil had earned for his answers.  The teacher also wrote down the mark in the class register.  When the teacher asked a question, the pupils who could answer it raised their hands, and the teacher called out one of them to answer the question.  The pupils were often called to the blackboard to do some exercises or to write some sentences.  When they made mistakes, other pupils were called out to correct those mistakes or the teacher corrected them herself. After every lesson the teachers gave us some home assignments both written and oral.

At the next lesson the teachers checked them up. The teachers often took our exercise-books home to check them up. If there were any mistakes they corrected them and gave us marks.

At the end of each quarter we got our report cards which our parents signed. At the end of the study year we were promoted, to the next form.
